Hydrogen: the road to a greener industry

During the Global Forum on Green Hydrogen, which is taking place in San Carlos de Bariloche, the sixth panel was in charge of representatives of three companies with international energy development. The topics were linked to the challenge of decarbonization and the path towards a greener industry.

In this framework, Elizabet Williams, Environment Manager of ArcelorMittal Acindar; Fabián Barrera, Project Manager PtX of Latin America Agora Energiewende; and María Herrera, Y-TEC Hydrogen Leader, were in charge of the presentation.

"These forums are extremely important, because these events always lead to the development of strategic alliances that will undoubtedly take us on the road to decarbonization," said Williams.

As regards ArcelorMitta's sustainability strategy, the manager pointed out "there are several pillars linked to the environment and energy. Our company is leading on the issue of decarbonization and has already launched two climate action reports, in which global CO2 reduction goals are set, so we want to be leaders in these processes in favor of the environment".

On the other hand, Fabián Barrera, Project Manager Ptx Latin America Agora Energiewende, presented a study that proposes specific actions so that Argentina can become a center for the production of ammonia and green fertilizers.

From this perspective, he explained, "green ammonia would be produced from renewable hydrogen, water electrolysis, and thus it can decouple dependence on natural gas."

"We see the potential of Argentina, with short and medium term measures, in view of the possibility of green ammonia production, especially for the local production of fertilizers. The contribution that the country can give to the world in the export of green products, will allow us to advance in the global mitigation of the greenhouse effect," he stated.

Finally, the leader of Y-TEC Hydrogen, María Herrera, pointed out "in the industries one of the key elements are the electrolyzers and, in that sense, we made the decision to use an alkaline technology, which is a mature and environmentally conscious technology, and from YPF Tecnología we are addressing it for the first time."

"Our objective, for export projects as well as for decarbonization in industries, is to start the development of a high-power alkaline electrolyzer, our own technology, as we have the potential and the capacity to produce our own electrolyzers in Argentina without the need to export," she concluded.
